A Transformational Leadership Journey: The Ongoing Evolution of SECURE.

My path to becoming an effective leader has been, and continues to be, a journey of self-discovery, filled with hard lessons, deep reflection, and growth. The truth is, great leadership is not a destination but an evolving process. Each experience, each group of people I have the opportunity to lead, reveals new areas where I can learn, adapt, and improve. The turning point came when I realized that in order to lead effectively, I had to create an environment where my team felt secure, valued, and empowered. This realization laid the groundwork for transforming a struggling level 3 school into a level 1 school and ultimately became the foundation of what is now the SECURE Framework.

Self-Reflection and Vulnerability

One of the first lessons I learned was the importance of Status—ensuring that my team felt valued for their contributions. What I initially thought were gestures of appreciation, like free lunches and gatherings, didn’t address their deeper need for recognition. It was humbling to realize that my communication wasn’t landing as intended. I embraced vulnerability, sought feedback, and committed to understanding how my actions affected my team’s sense of value. This was the beginning of addressing the "S" in SECURE: making every team member feel seen and appreciated.

Clarity in Leadership

For years, my spontaneous and energetic leadership style lacked Certainty and clear communication. My team perceived me as inconsistent, and surveys labeled me an ineffective leader. It became clear that without providing stability and clear expectations, I was losing trust. Through the support of a coach, I learned to improve my communication and ensure that my team knew what was expected of them. This shift brought a new sense of Certainty to my leadership and created a more stable environment.

Motivation and Unity

As I became more intentional in how I motivated my team, I realized that true Unity couldn’t be achieved without involving everyone in the vision. I started aligning our goals, encouraging collaboration, and fostering a sense of team spirit. By making sure my actions reflected my priorities, I addressed the Care and Priority components that inspire change. This unified approach made the team more engaged and willing to invest in the success of our mission.

Respect and Empowerment

Respect and trust are the backbone of any team. I began to focus on building Respectful Relationships with my staff, understanding that leadership isn’t about control but about creating an environment where people feel heard and empowered. By providing autonomy and valuing their input, I implemented the Empowerment piece of the SECURE framework, which led to greater ownership and higher performance across the board.

Embracing Change Through the SECURE Framework

The SECURE elements—Status, Equitable Opportunities, Certainty, Unity, Respectful Relationships, and Empowerment—became the foundation of my leadership transformation. As I continue to evolve and grow, I realize that each step in this journey is about more than just achieving a goal; it’s about consistently refining my approach to leadership based on new experiences and insights. The SECURE framework helps leaders, including myself, remain grounded in what truly matters: keeping our people by making them feel secure.

The Journey Continues

This personal transformation is why I’m passionate about helping leaders do the same. I know that the process of becoming a great leader never truly ends. As leaders, we must continuously learn, adapt, and grow to meet the changing needs of our teams. When you create a secure environment where employees feel valued, trusted, and empowered, they stay—and they thrive. The SECURE framework offers a practical path for leaders who are committed to ongoing growth and developing environments where people feel safe to perform at their best.
